First Edition November 4 – Junee Newsagency to stock the Independent

After close to two years without a local paper, the Junee Newsagency will be supplying The Junee Independent, each week, from November 4. The paper will focus on the coverage of events and topics relevant to the people of Junee. Owner of the newsagency, Tanya Guinan, said that she is looking forward to the launch of the paper, with the community feeling the absence of the previous newspaper.

“We are very excited to have a paper back in our newsagency. We’ve missed it,” she said. After the loss of the Southern Cross newspaper, Tanya said the local community have struggled to keep up to date with what is happening in their town. “It was devastating,” she explained.

“Most of Junee relied on the paper just to find out information. No one knows where to go to find out what is happening in the town.” With local news only available online and through social media, Tanya said that the Junee community are eager for the return of a print product. “We have been telling a few people about the paper coming into town and they are very excited about it,” she said.

The newsagency itself suffered after the Southern Cross announced its closure, losing the revenue that the paper brought in. Tanya told The Independent that she used to sell about 400 copies of the paper per week. “It was definitely a loss,” she said. There will be a new edition of the Junee Independent available at the Junee Newsagency every Thursday, covering local sport, politics and community-based stories. If you have any information on what is happening in town, be sure to contact the Junee Independent.
