As the first of November fast approaches, we all begin to plan how we’re going to watch the famous Melbourne Cup race.
The Junee Ex-Services Club has you covered with a Melbourne Cup Day event that will satisfy your appetite for the nation’s biggest day of horse racing.
With a free drink upon entry and early opening hours alongside prizes for best-dressed man and woman, best woman’s hat/fascinator and best-dressed man’s tie/bow tie, how could you say no?
General Manager Clare Hoadley says there is a lot to look forward to. “It’ll be the first since the start of COVID restrictions so it should be a massive day,” she said.
“It’ll be great, the atmosphere of the club will be so good, perfect for an event like this. “The club will be opening at 8:30am for the Cup.” The undercard this year features the Group 3 Darley Maribyrnong Plate (1000m) and Group 3 The Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes (1400m) for mares plus the popular Subzero Handicap (1400m), a race restricted to grey horses.
There have been some pretty huge winners in the past few years of the Cup with the four-length win from Verry Elleegant and jockey James McDonald last year, rising another level after going in without a win above 2,400 metres, which makes the 3,200-metre victory an impressive feat.
Verry Elleegant retired this week after a decorated career winning both the Caulfield Cup and the Melbourne Cup. Aside from the Melbourne Cup, the Ex-Services is also gearing up for Christmas time which will be the next big day for the club. “Christmas draw is coming up and that’ll be December 17,” said Clare.
“It’ll be roughly $10,000 worth of prizes. All the prizes have been chosen and purchased and we’re putting it all together. All of our Christmas decorations have arrived.” The Melbourne Cup race starts at 3pm on November 1.
