At Pie in the Sky III last week, we saw many families face off on the paddock with the daughters overcoming their fathers in a dads versus daughters league tag match. Coming on before the headlining blockbuster Pie in the Sky III David Reid Homes All Stars v Junee Diesels, the girls had already torn up the ground by beating the dads 16-12.
It wasn’t the first time this game has been played, previously during a club bye, the girls still wanted to burn some energy and test their league tag skills so they invited their dads for a match. Ever since then there has been a push to give it another try and the opportunity finally came by when the Pie in the Sky III landed in Junee. David Holt, President of the Junee Diesels, wanted to see this rematch and what better way to do it than in front of local hero Laurie Daley?
“That was just a great concept we had come up with a couple of years ago,” he said. “It was a big hit then so we got in and organised it properly. It was just great fun. “The girls said to their fathers, we challenge you to a game of league tag and it was fun, entertaining and played in the right spirit.” Captain Abbi Duck enjoyed the game and looks forward to the rest of the season. “It was definitely fun. It was hot as well,” she said. “We were all very worn out and tired but it was definitely a very fun game and it was good for us girls to get a game early into the season so we could figure out our structure and have a look at what the rest of the season will look like for us.
“It was a lot of hard work from the some of the committee members so David Holt, Katrina Bradley and Katie Carroll were really the ones that did a lot of the work and they just made it happen for us, which is amazing. “We’re really glad and very lucky that they put in all the hard effort that they did to get it to happen again.” Last year the Diesels league tag side finished 7 on the ladder after a rocky season that saw monumental improvements from the girls as the season progressed. After the improvement last year, the girls are ready to get back at it and see where they can aim this season.
“We’re pretty hopeful. We’ve had very good numbers at training so far and more registrations are still coming through. “We’re already working on skills and getting our fitness up and we’re all very excited for the season ahead. We’ve set ourselves some goals and we have some fairly good ideas on what we’d like to achieve this year.” Although they missed out on finals last year, the revived Diesels club could see a bigger and better league tag side when winter rugby league once again kicks off.
