Junee Crop Competition Opens for Croppers

Registration has opened for the Junee Show Society’s RAS Field Crop 2023 Competition which will see cash prizes given out for the ability to produce crops. The Society is proud of the range of crops that are
produced within the shire so they want to showcase the farming talents of the residents.

There are a few conditions that must be met which are: all crops must be grown by the entrant whether share farmed or not, crops that are commercially produced for human consumption, processing and feed or fodder use and that crops must be grown within Junee Shire.

Chief Steward Lisa Oliver of AB and LL Oliver Contracting wants people to know they have some time for registrations if they are not sure about entering.

“We haven’t set the date yet for the competition. We’re going to wait and see probably more towards the
middle of October so that we can see the progress and maturity of the crops and see what date works best,” she said.

“Then we can go in and judge yield and all those sorts of things, management, quality. We just need
a bit more of an idea of what things look like before harvest.

“We’ve got a wheat competition, a barely comp, a canola and all crop competition. We judge all crops that mainly grow in this area. It’s more of a management-style prize where the person with the largest margin at the end gets the prize.

“Growers in the last few years, it’s been dual-purpose canola that will come out on top where it’s been
grazed for a long period of time and then they’ve also got income from harvesting it at the end. We run that competition as well.”

Judges will include Lisa, Bernard Hart from Hart Bros Seeds, Stephen Rouch from AGnVET, Angus Knight from JJS Glass and Co, and Bill Scott from Key Agri.

“Other regions have their own crop competition and if they win the Junee Shire one then I send their details through to the RAS and then allocate points to the winners and send it to them.

Biggest point scorers from the state go onto another
competition.”

Last year Junee won.

“We’re in a good position for farming especially compared to those north of us.”

Crops will be judged on the planning, production, monitoring and marketing abilities of the producer. If you want to enter, contact Lisa Oliver on 0438 244 484 to enter.
