Charlton falls short of a century

Junee cricket Trent Charlton fell agonisingly short of a century in Wagga on Saturday, bringing up 97 runs for Lake Albert. Playing at Henwood Park against the Kooringal Colts in Round Four of the Cricket Wagga Wagga (CWW) Third Grade competition, Lake Albert put on 8/208 in their 40 overs.

Charlton opened the batting and scored his 97, and the Bulls looked to be on their way to a good win. Charlton also had a bowl, taking 1/33 from five overs, and fellow Junee product William McGrath rolled the arm over, finishing with 0/47 from 7.5 overs, but Kooringal chased down the total to win, finishing on 5/213 after 38.5 overs.

Lake Albert Maroon now sits in fifth position in the 13-side Third-Grade competition, and they take on Wagga RSL Black on Saturday, with their game set to be played at Ashmont Oval. Another Junee cricketer Sam Smith didn’t have such a good day on Saturday, with the all rounder trapped leg before wicket on a five ball duck, while his Wagga RSL Bulldogs went down to St Michaels in their Round Four First Grade fixture at Wagga RSL Cricket Ground.

St Michaels won the toss and elected to bat, scoring 8/236 in 50 overs. Smith bowled a full ten-over spell and finished with figures of 1/45. In reply, Smith’s Bulldogs were all out for 182 in 48.5 overs. In other CWW First Grade results, South Wagga at 5/164 defeated Kooringal 10/163 and Lake Albert at 2/97 knocked over Wagga City Cats at 10/96. Smith and his Wagga RSL side take on the last- placed Kooringal Colts in their Round Five match at Wagga RSL Cricket Ground on Saturday, while South Wagga hosts Lake Albert at Robertson Oval and Wagga City takes on a visiting St Michaels at McPherson Oval.
