Vergano to lead Netballers into new season

Long-standing Junee Netball Club President Rob Vergano will go around for a seventh season in 2024 after re-election at the club’s recent AGM.

He will spearhead a new-look executive committee, with Linda and Josh Moncrieff stepping down from the roles of Secretary and Vice-President, respectively.

Simone Leatham stays on as Treasurer, while Jess Wood steps in as the new Vice-President and Mangi Temaru takes over as Secretary.

“This was my sixth year, and I was happy to stand down, but nobody put their hand up,” Vergano laughed.

“We are looking at that succession plan, and Jess is a parent of young girls in the club, and Mangi is only 19 or so, and they are the future.

“They will be around for the years to come, so it’s good to see them get involved.”

Vergano was thankful to the Moncrieff’s for all their help, and he was looking forward to ushering in a new and exciting future for Junee Netball Club.

“We thank the outgoing executive members for their effort and involvement,” Vergano said.

“Although Linda and Josh aren’t on the committee, they will still help with fundraising, sponsorship, and all things netball.

“With the new executive, it’s good to see some fresh faces, and Mangi is eager to learn and take things on.

“She’ll take over that social media aspect, boost publicity, and let everyone know what’s happening at training and game day.

“With Jess, she is a local council member and will bring good organisational skills, structure, and good governance.”

Junee Netball Club were meeting again on Tuesday night, and Vergano is excited about the interest shown ahead of the 2024 season.

“At our general meeting tomorrow (Tuesday), the plan is to lock everything down,” Vergano said.

“We sent out an EOI (Expression of Interest), and we already have 56 players returning for next year, and it is November, and the competition doesn’t kick off until late April.

“Registrations open December 1, a week and a half away. And we have even attracted two players from Fiji who want to come over, and they are just getting their Visa sorted.”

Junee Netball Club strives to be an affordable option for parents, and Vergano said his committee was already thinking of ways to raise money ahead of 2024 and beyond.

“We have got some really good direction and excellent fundraising and sponsorship ideas,” Vergano said.

“We’ve got some good ideas coming, and we are doing a can drive; we know businesses can’t flick us too much money, but Junee Hotel offered us their bottles for the entire season, and we’ll have some more news on ways we plan to raise money.”

In more netball news, Junee took on a strong Panthers team in Round Eight of the Wagga Wagga Netball Association Tuesday night social competition.

The Panthers started strongly, but Junee worked had to reel in the competition leaders, shipping away quarter-by-quarter to land a 20-all draw.

Junee played Reddies Sporties on Tuesday night and the Junee Independent will have all results next week.
