Mooney Golf Day set for Saturday

To celebrate the 25th year anniversary of the Jack Mooney Memorial, the Mooney family is running a raffle and, at the Junee Golf Club on October 26, a memorial golf day. It is a shotgun start at 9:00 am.

Raffle 1st prize a Golf Experience for 2 at Twin Creeks Sydney. 2nd Prize a meat and Veggie tray and 3rd prize is a Bunnings $100 voucher.

Tickets from The Junee Golf Club and selected outlets.

Pat Mooney, son of the late Jack Mooney, said the Golf Club got together to hold a day for his father after his passing.

“Jack was my father and a good sportsman all-round. He served in the War, New Guinea, Darwin, and other places.

Anything he took up; he was good at. He held golf days and the Club thought they would like to keep it all going and we didn’t know how long it would go for, but we are into the twenty-fifth one,” he said.

“Dad played O’Farrell Cup in the cricket, which was pretty strong at that time and he used to be at the golf club all the time teaching the young ones how to play golf. There’s a lot of young ones out there now and they all remember that he taught them and showed them how to play the game and etiquette and the like.

“It’s a great thing for the family to have the golf day, but the grandsons also play Aussie rules and cricket. A couple great grandsons play for Collingullie and they won the premiership a few weeks ago. I played everything as well, but just on the local level.”

The Jack Mooney Memorial golf day was started 25 years ago. The Junee Golf Club members started it and it has continued since.

“We supply raffles and prizes and all the money goes to the Golf Club.

People come from everywhere. As well as family and other members, there’s people coming from Queensland and Canberra and also Kapooka as it’s part of their club now too.

“Jack’s kids, grandkids, great grandkids, great great grandkids will all have a hit. It’s a great day.

“There’s usually about 30 players. There used to be a four-ball best ball, but the women have declined there now, as they get older there are only about three left that play.

“After the game, there’s an afternoon tea at 1.30pm and then we have all the raffles.

There’s also the guess how many lollies in the jar and all that sort of thing.

“All the money goes to the Golf Club.

“If you are a member of another club you can still turn up on the day with a partner and play.”

The day is open for all to participate.
