Dakota Huard and Ruby Lemmich.
The Junee Lions Club held their Youth of the Year competition on Tuesday February 18. The competition consists of a two sections, an interview with the judging panel – consisting of 3 people, and then a public speaking section where students do two impromptu speeches and a prepared speech, of a topic of their own choosing, in front of an audience of Lions members and the public.
Students complete an application form about themselves, including their initiatives at school, their activities and involvement outside of school and their academic achievements. They are then asked some general knowledge questions in their interview and are also judged on their presentation during the interview.

This year we had 2 contestants from Junee High School, who presented speeches on a range of topics. The students Ruby Lemmich and Dakota Huard, presented excellent prepared speeches, the judges commented on the delivery by both contestants. The impromptu topics asked students to talk about one person they would want to spend an hour with and does technology isolate us or bring us closer together.
The judges were very impressed with the students, and commented on their achievements, their personalities in the interview and their willingness to be involved in a range of activities.
On the night there is a public speaking winner and an overall winner. Dakota was the Public Speaking winner and Ruby the overall winner of the evening. Ruby went on to represent the club at the next round of the competition in Cowra on Saturday March 8, where she spoke very well, but was not successful on the day.
The Club would like to thank our judges for the evening and Junee High School, who continue to support our competition.
Our club is able to support projects, like Youth of the Year, because of the ongoing donations of cardboard and cans from Junee businesses and community, which is our main fundraising activity.
