Diesels Miss Out Narrowly vs Bulls – Keep Their Cup Run Going

Daniel Foley surveys the defence.

The Junee Diesels went down devastatingly this past Sunday against the South City Bulls 28-24 at Harris Park. Despite a great effort from the Diesels, players and coaches alike will feel the side should’ve come away with the two points, having led for large portions of the game and having a rough day goal-kicking.

Special plaudits were handed out to Nick Hogarth on the day, who was excellent in a losing effort for the Diesels, bagging himself a hat-trick and putting himself right up there with the top try-scorers to start the season.

President of the Diesels David Holt thought the men were unlucky in defeat.

“A lot of positives came out of the weekend and a couple of bits that can be straightened up on fairly soon without too much effort,” Holt said.

“Based on how competitive we were against a South City side that won the West Wyalong knockout, we can look forward to a strong season.”

Despite the defeat the Diesels remain in the new cup competition Group 9 is hosting after keeping the game within 10.5 points that Group 9 officials allocated as the spread.

Holt says the new cup competition can only be good for Group 9. “It’s a good thing, it’s certainly a great concept. It’ll generate extra interest throughout the season, especially for those teams that will be down near the bottom it still gives them something to compete for in the latter stages of the season,” he continued.

“When you compare it to last year’s cup, that was only a factor in five of the16 rounds, this year’s version is much better.”

The Diesels will comeback after the Easter break with a favourable fixture playing last year’s wooden spooners the Wagga Brothers. The Brothers are coming off the back of the wrong end of a demolition job by the Young Cherrypickers, going down 54-6. Holt believes his team will need to stay honest and play their best against the Brothers to get the two points.

“They’ll come into the game motivated looking to make a bit of ground up after a rough start to the season, we’re probably going to start favourites but in Group 9 you can’t take any game for granted so if we’re not at our best it could comeback to bite us,” he finished.
