The Junee Show is upon us on October 25, which may sound like a long way away, but for the committee working hard to get it ready, it feels like it’s approaching quickly.
President Peter Commens, however, is certain the Show will have everything up to its usual high standard by the time the date rolls around.
“Things are going well. We’ve got sponsors lined up and we are working on our schedule fairly soon,” he said.
“Applications have opened up for trade space. At our meeting, we heard we had a couple of them come in and quite a few people have rung to get their forms as well. I suggest that they get in fairly early as we might fill up. We can only take so many.
“Everything is moving along pretty well.”

“I’ve been on the committee for my now, 60th year, and I think it’s the satisfaction that you get from working and giving a bit of time and volunteering. It’s well worth it. Sometimes you will ask people and they say they haven’t got time and things like that, and we desperately need more volunteers, not just for the show, but for most organisations.
“It is for satisfaction. That’s what I get out of it, that’s why I’m still there.
“By eight or nine o’clock at night when the night show is on, and you’re worn out, you think, “Why am I doing it”? When it’s all over and it goes well, you see the smiles on everyone’s faces, that’s why I do it. We are very fortunate that we’ve got quite a few very generous sponsors that help us because you can’t run a show just with the money that you get at the gate and what you might make out of the bar, it’s just not possible today.
“The public has always supported us well, which we certainly appreciate because there’s nothing worse than putting on a big event and doing a lot of work and then people don’t come, but we haven’t got that problem in Junee. They just always seem to turn up.
“At the moment it’s just getting mainly secretarial work done. The girls are putting the schedule together and things like that. The ground is in pretty good order. We’ve had a fair bit done to the ground the last little while.
“The showground is starting to get a lot of use now. People are hiring the hall for parties and weddings, which is good because we were fortunate to get quite a few grants and we’ve had it all done up and the ground looks good. There’s a lot more we could do to it, but we haven’t got the money and we’ve got to get grants to do it.
“We’ve got some good entertainment lined up. We’ve got the duck lady coming back this year with her racing ducks, which we had two years ago and they were extremely popular. We’ve got dog-high jumping going this year, which is always a bit of fun and the crowd get behind it. We’ve got a very good course commentator.
“It’s all starting to come together.”
