After taking the helm for the Poker Run committee since its inception, Tony Fitzgerald has handed over the keys to a new President, Jen Parsons.
Twenty years is a long time as president for anything, but for what has become such a smash hit in town, it was a big undertaking that he is now ready to step away from. Who better than previous secretary, Jan Parsons, to take the lead? Now the new team gears up for their 21st iteration of the iconic event in February.
The event raised $42,000 for local charity Can Assist this year and is looking to boost that number even more next year.
The Junee Poker Run is known among much of the region as one of the largest charity bike events in Australia with between 400 and 500 participants each year which increases each time. Can Assist is a local cancer support network that assists local people and families who are affected by cancer with practical help. All money stays local and is used by local people.
The Junee Poker Run and Blues Night was started in 2005 by a group of Junee people who were watching a TV program at a local hotel called American Chopper had a story about a similar concept, and they decided to do a ride. It rained the entire week before the first poker run and they had about 60 riders take part. Junee locals, Ron and Sue Hindmarsh have always been stalwarts of the event and Ron and his family are still heavily involved nearly 20 years later.
