The air at Geohex Stadium crackled with anticipation today as the Gundagai Tigers delivered a stunning blow to the undefeated Wagga Kangaroos, securing a memorable 22-10 victory in their Round 11 Group 9 First Grade clash. The result sends shockwaves through the competition, marking the Kangaroos’ first loss of the season and firmly cementing the Tigers’ premiership aspirations.
The Kangaroos, who had swept all 10 of their previous games, came into the match as clear favourites, their perfect record a testament to their dominance. But the third-placed Gundagai Tigers had other ideas, fuelled by the desire to prove themselves against the competition’s benchmark.
Tigers coach Aaron Gorrell revealed the internal shift that drove his team’s performance. “Last week was a bit of a reality check to make sure we’re on week in and week out,” Gorrell stated post-match. “You could tell we flipped a switch this week, which we needed to, and put on our best performance of the year.”
From the outset, it was clear this wouldn’t be a typical stroll for the Wagga side. The Tigers’ defence was resolute, meeting every Kangaroos’ charge with fierce determination. Gorrell highlighted a key area of improvement: “We didn’t invite them into our half, last couple weeks our discipline has cost us. Our focus was to improve that, and it felt like we did.”
Their attacking prowess soon shone through, with Royce Tout drawing first blood, crossing the try line to ignite the home crowd. Not long after, Derek Hay added to the Tigers’ tally, extending their lead and putting real pressure on the visitors. Gorrell was pleased with the early dominance, noting, “We opened up an 18-0 lead, were strong the whole game, it was a gritty win.”
The Kangaroos, never ones to back down, showed flashes of their brilliance. Khaileb Cameron-Pani managed to breach the Tigers’ line, keeping Wagga in the contest and hinting at a potential comeback. Later, James Smart also crossed for the Kangaroos, demonstrating their talent, but these efforts weren’t enough to stem the tide.
The Tigers’ momentum continued into the later stages, with Will Herring adding another crucial try, further solidifying their advantage. The final nail in the Kangaroos’ coffin came from Toby Dasey, whose try sealed the deal and confirmed the upset.
Gorrell was effusive in his praise for individual efforts, singling out key performers. “Hayden Ashcroft was our best by far,” he commented, also commending Derek Hay (who scored a try) and James Morgan for their contributions.
The final whistle blew to a roar of jubilation from the Gundagai faithful, the scoreboard reading Tigers 22, Kangaroos 10. For the Wagga Kangaroos, it was a bitter pill to swallow – their perfect season was now blemished. For the Gundagai Tigers, it was a statement victory, a testament to their strength and a clear sign that they are serious contenders for the Group 9 title.
Looking ahead, Gorrell is pragmatic about the upcoming bye. “The bye isn’t a bad thing for us, we’ve got a few knocks, hopefully we can get them back.”
Their next challenge will be a formidable one. “We’ve got Tumut next who got us last time,” Gorrell said, acknowledging the previous defeat.
“It’ll be another physical test, their forward pack is physical and big. If we play like we did today, we have to be confident heading into that one.”
This win not only boosts the Tigers’ ladder position but also provides immense confidence as the competition heads into its crucial latter stages, setting the stage for an exciting rest of the season in Group 9.
