The Junee RSL Sub-Branch, in conjunction with St Luke’s Anglican Church, Junee, will be conducting a Commemorative Service at 9:30am for UN Peacekeeper Day on Sunday May 25 at St Luke’s.
The focus of the Service will be “Hope in Peace — Give Peace a Chance” and will honour UN Peacekeepers currently, and previously, serving.
The UN Flag and the Australian Flag will be presented and a commemorative wreath will be laid at the altar. The service will be followed by Morning Tea.
Veterans, Peacekeepers and Serving Personnel are encouraged to wear medals. Immediate family members may wear deceased veteran’s medals on the right breast.
Rev David Hilliard of St Luke’s said, “It’s a great way to show our thanks and appreciation for what peacekeepers have done and also to support those who are veterans of peacekeeping as well. Peacekeeping can be as dangerous as peacemaking or war-like operations.
“The first one was a bit quiet. We grew in numbers and participation and this year we’ve actually got some more interest from other places outside of Junee, including Wagga, Kapooka, Gundagai, and Cootamundra.
“Again, this year for the third time, we’ve got a group of musicians coming from Wagga to help us out and they’re always great fun. They’re headed up by a local music teacher in Wagga. I’m really thankful for their willingness. I’m thankful for Shane Logan, who plays the trumpet for Last Post and Rouse, the RSL Sub Branch, which here in Junee, work hand in hand as part of this service. That partnership’s been strengthened over the last few years, and for the community who come along and support the veterans and the peacekeepers who are not related to any peacekeepers, but they come along in support.
