Junee Lions Club celebrated another successful year with its 51st annual changeover dinner held recently.
Incoming President Peter Jauncey, who succeeds Nikki Cocks, told the gathering that the club had distributed more than $9,000 to local and Lions’ charitable causes over the previous 12 months.
The new board includes husband and wife Steve and Vicki Gardner as Secretary and Treasurer respectively. Neil Sheedy will serve as 1st Vice-President with Garry Doneley as 2nd VP and Denis Sullivan looking after membership.
The function welcomed a visit by 1st Vice 201 N4District Governor Judy Ryan of Bathurst’s Mount Panorama Lions Club and her husband, PDG Michael. Secretary, Stephen Gardner, expanded on the dinner in an interview with the Junee Independent.
“The Changeover was attended by our Federal Member Michael McCormick and the mayor, Bob Callow as well. Bob and Diane Smith from Wagga were also in attendance, they are both district cabinet members.
“The event was to induct the new board for the upcoming year, a new President, Peter Jauncey.
“Nikki Cocks spoke on the fact that we had a good year, we’d donated over $9,000. The money goes to various local causes, such as Vinnies and some others, and also to our Lions Foundations, which work with childhood cancer, prostate cancer, Lions Cord Blood Foundation and various other things.
“That money is raised through recycling of cardboard, cans and bottles and drummuster.
“We also assist at the Schoolboy’s Footy Carnival, which also raises us some money as well as collecting at the Junee and Illabo Show gates. Those are just a few of the service schemes that we’re involved in.
“One of the upcoming ones is, we’re going to be testing kids in the primary schools for part of the Lions eye health program. It is just a few basic tests that we carry out, which we can then recommend the children to see optometrists if there are any sort of slight abnormalities. We’re not experts, but we’ve got some equipment that just does those basic tests. That is coming up in the next few weeks at all the local primary schools.
“It has been a good year for the Lions Club. Successful financially and we were able to donate quite a few dollars. Membership in Lions is steady, but we’re always looking for more members.
“The President was congratulated by the speakers on her successful year.”
