The Riverina Schoolboys Carnival will run its 80th event on August 2, but the committee is looking to a special dinner this Saturday at the Junee Ex-Services.
Secretary of the committee, Maree Allamby, said, “It’s coming along pretty good. We’ve got over 120 teams nominated at this stage and referee nominations are starting to come in and everything seems to be falling into place.
“We are having another meeting on Thursday evening to discuss the catering options with all our catering people. We’ve outsourced our catering instead of doing all the catering. We are doing what we did last year and the Junee Junior Rugby League are doing their canteen, the Seniors are doing their canteen, the Soccer Club their canteen and so on. We find that there is a lot less pressure on us and everyone else is happy with the options.
“Because it’s the 80th Carnival, we thought we’d do something a little bit different, a little bit special and have a dinner and we’ve invited people from families of people that have spent a lot of time involved in the club.
“There’s about 60 people that will be inattendance and the flavour of the evening is more to reminisce. We’ve been sent a lot of stories or memories from people.
“We’ve been able to accumulate a few photos dating back to about 1947, so we will have those pieces of memorabilia on display.
“The Carnival isbeing held on Saturday, 2nd August. “It’s pretty special to think that our little small community has been able to have something like that go for so long. It has only ever been called off three times, once was the weather and twice was Covid.
“We expect around 147 teams on the actual day. This year, we are incorporating the Under 16s as they’ve been moved back to the juniors. At this stage, I’ve got four teams nominated for that.
“We couldn’t do it without the support of our local community.“There are a lot of places in town that sponsor the carnival so that we can pay our referees. We get pennants for the older division, we are not allowed to have them for the younger kids anymore. Everything is non-competitive from the Under12’s down so we have organised a certificate for all of those players.
“The committee are grateful for all the support that we’ve been getting.
“We are putting out a booklet with a lot of memories, the history of the carnival and we have received such a great response, and we are hoping to have it released for the Carnival.”
