The 135th Junee Show will take place at the Junee Showgrounds on October 25 with entertainment from 9:00 am. Peter Commens, President of the Junee Show Society, gave the Junee Independent a rundown of what’s on and what the community can expect.
“It looks brilliant. I don’t think the ground has ever looked better. There’s not a weed or a bit of long grass anywhere. It’s all been mowed and whipper snipped, and everything is set up,” he said.
“There are a fair few sideshow people here already. The girls have been receiving entries on Tuesday and Wednesday.
“We have got a good team here and they’re getting a few more younger ones coming along to help us, which is good because the few older ones are starting to wear out.
“It is the 135th annual show. A lot of why we’ve survived for so long has to do with helpers. We haven’t got a lot of helpers either, but we get in and do it, and there are a lot of people around who will come and help you, but you’ve got to ask them. We don’t know them, and then somebody comes up to you and says, “Oh, can we give you a hand to do this?” Then they come down and help us set up.
“The duck racing is probably our major attraction this year. That proved to be very popular a couple of years ago. We couldn’t get it back last year, but we’ve got them again this year. It was a real crowd pleaser; they really liked it.
“We’ve got the horse events and we’ve got the very popular gumboot throwing, particularly with the young ones, and the Bushman’s relay, all those things will be held late in the afternoon, to keep things going until the fireworks.
“We didn’t go overboard with attractions this year because you never know how the money is going to come in, but as far as the sponsors go, they have been absolutely magnificent this year. We’ve had sponsors come out of the woodwork and sponsor various sections. Some of them have just given us money to do different things, and it’s made a big difference.
“We get the High School kids that come down here on Friday, who help the ladies put the pavilion together, and the boys come and set up for their livestock and the junior judging. That is becoming very popular now.
“I really want to thank all our sponsors and all our committee members for the work that they’ve done.
“I also want to thank Michael McCormack and Steph Cooke for some grants that they’ve got for us to be able to tidy our PA system up and replace it so the birds don’t wreck it. We’ve got a lot of concreting around here too now, so it makes it a lot easier to get into the pavilion and a couple of pathways up to the toilet block.”
