The Junee Diesels weren’t able to beat the Bulls on Sunday at Harris Park, going down to South City 22 – 18. Despite the loss, Junee still came away with the Ray White Challenge Cup.
President of the Junee Diesels, David Holt, said that it was an extremely close game.
“There was perseverance from both sides. It was a great game of footy. It went right down to the wire. There were only a couple of minutes left before South City scored the winning points. Unfortunately, we just weren’t quite good enough,” he said.
“There were some positives out of the game. We are really looking forward to the rest of the season. Right across the park, the boys played well, but it is just a shame that is the way footy goes at times,” he said.
“It was good footy right across the park. When we’d get in front, they’d get in front, we’d get in front, it was a backwards and forwards game. It was a pretty evenly matched game throughout.
“This week we have Albury here at home. We are looking forward to a good match-up there, and we will see what comes of it.
“We are happy to be staying at home this week, because we have had a fair bit of travel already in the first half of this season, with the majority of our games being away games, which is just the way things happen.
“It is always good to be at home in front of a good crowd.”
The league tag girls had a great win, 20 – 4, but the U18S weren’t as lucky, going down 62 – 0. Women’s tackle won 10 – 8, and reserves went down 42 – 4.
“The League Tag girls are continuing on with their good form. They are getting better and better each week.
“It was a close game, but the girls stood up to the task and got across the line.
“The same could be said for the women’s tackle as well; that was a very close game.
“Those girls stuck to their guns, stuck to the game plan and came away with a victory. It was good to see.
“The Reserves didn’t fare too well. We’ve got plenty of depth in the club, but unfortunately, in the last few weeks, we’ve suffered a tremendous amount of injuries, and there were a few Under-18s who actually had to back up. When we have 50-plus senior players registered with the club, that shows how many injuries we’ve got at the moment. Hopefully, that can turn around.
“The Reserve grade was behind the eight ball from
the kickoff.”
The Diesels will play Albury Thunder on Sunday at Laurie Daley Oval.
