The Diesels went down to Young at Alfred Oval on Saturday, taking a 36 – 26 loss after Young shut down a late comeback from Junee.
President of the Junee Diesels, David Holt, said, “Young is always strong at home. It was always going to be a hard task, but we ran out of troops. It was pure and simple; we suffered a lot of injuries. A player broke an arm in the first half, and then there were a couple more broken ankles and knees. Unfortunately, the blokes out there were absolutely knackered, and in that last 15 minutes, that’s when Young got themselves back in front. It was a great game of footy, a very tough game of footy, too.”
“To be so close to another victory. The way the players came back in the game, they were behind on the scoreboard for the majority of the game, caught up and got themselves in front, but it was just the fatigue of the players that were still out on the field that ended up being the difference. That’s where Young got back in front.
“Yes, it’s a good indicator of where we’re at and what we’ve got to do. We come up against South City this weekend, so there’s another strong game. That will be a tough one over at Harris Park.”
The Diesels haven’t lost by many points in each game they have come out second place to, and David said they need to “keep doing what [they’re] doing”.
“In Reserve grade, they’re a bit the same. It’s hard to get the players to travel, and they are a bit short on, plus there have been a few injuries,” he said.
“We have started with a massive amount of injuries this season, but that’s the way footy goes. They were a bit behind the eight ball at the start of the game, and the score blew out a little bit there.”
The women’s tackle team recently had their first game and had a good hit out.
Reaching 12-all at halftime, David said they put the “pedal down and piled the points on” taking the win at 38-12.
“The women’s tackle had a great second half,” he said.
“Our 18s boys got pumped out of the park a bit. That one blew right out. It was 46-0. But again, they put in a good effort.
“The league tag girls, they won as well, fairly convincingly.
“They have gone pretty well this season. They’re a very young team. There are a lot of them that have only one or two years in the senior ranks. They’re just going to get better and better as the year goes on.”
The Diesels will take on the South City Bulls at Harris Park on Sunday, May 17.
