It was a massive day for the Junee Diesels’ first home game of the season, with a good chunk of brilliant footy matches, even if the Diesels were ultimately unable to get the win against the Coota Bulldogs 28 – 22.
Daniel Foley played his 200th Club game for the day, and the Club also paid respect with a minute’s silence to Life Member Leo McCarthy, who recently passed away.
Junee didn’t quite get over the line, but put up a pretty good fight against Cootamundra.
President of the Club, David Holt, said it was a very good day for the Club, even if the Diesels weren’t able to bag the win.
“Unfortunately, Coota got away to a bit of a start. Our boys had to always play catch-up football the whole game and lost the race against the clock,” he said.
“We have come a long way. There’d be a couple of little things that they will tidy up on this week and get set to face Young.
“Young is always tough, especially at home. Everybody is getting prepared to go up there and take them on. The girls’ tackle team have their first hit out for the season this weekend, even though they have played a trial match, but they get their first go of the season, which is good.
“Neither Gundagai nor Coota have got a women’s tackle, so unfortunately the girls haven’t had a run yet, except for against Gungahlin before the season.”
The Reserve grade pummelled the Bulldogs with a stunning 26 – 0 win, which was also the Terry Douglas Memorial Shield, with Junee taking home
the Shield.
The Player of the match went to Bailey Robertson.
“The Reserve grade was solid right from the outset. They were determined. The Terry Douglas Memorial Shield was on the line there, so they had a lot of determination. They weren’t going to let that shield go, and it shows, as they kept them to zero.”
“In the 18s, Coota got a start on them. They scored two quick tries, and after that, Junee knuckled down, and it was a gutsy effort from them. They were unlucky not to win the game. It’s all good to come away with the 10 – 10 draw as opposed to a complete loss, but the boys played a very good game there. It was a very gutsy effort.
“The league tag girls are about the same story, as the game went back and forth. Unfortunately, the girls just couldn’t quite get that extra point to snare a victory and ended 14 – 14.”
Diesels will play Young Cherrypickers at Alfred Oval on Saturday with a huge card that will span from the morning to the afternoon.
