Marrar Bombers took to Langtry Oval on Saturday afternoon to take on top team, the EWK Hawks, which resulted in an unfortunate 19.12.126 – 10.5.65 loss.
It was a close game for the first quarter as the Bombers trailed behind the Hawks, but by the time the halftime siren blared, the Bombers were unable to keep up.The points just piled on, but the Bombers kept up the pressure as much as they could, showing signs of life throughout.
Team Manager, Sam Turner, said, “It probably just shows that our best footy can compete with the benchmark, which would be East Wagga. They’re undefeated. It just shows that we can compete, but only if we can learn to compete for longer periods, then we can give those sort of teams a shake up.”
“We had a couple of players out injured, which is no excuse, as did they, but I think in the end, they just got control of the game early on. When you’ve got one player kicking 11 goals, it’s pretty hard to stop.”
Jarrod Turner for the EWK Hawks kicked 11 goals, making him a tough opponent for the Bombers.
“It’s huge for the community to have home games like this. Home games are an absolute buzz out there now, especially with our upgraded surface, and we’ve got really state of the art lights there, which means we can hold night games now. The whole community really gets behind all their home games there, which is great. On a Saturday afternoon, all the locals like coming down, having a few beers and supporting, which is great,” Sam said.
“Matty Rynehart has been great. He’s only a young guy who they’ve changed positions with him and pushed him forward. He’s had a couple of really breakout games. He kicked six goals on the weekend, which, against a pretty formidable opposition, is unreal, and he was singlehandedly keeping us in the game at one stage on the weekend.
“He has kicked multiple bags of goals in other games as well. He would be one of our highlights, as well as Caleb Walker. He’s an absolute superstar. He missed through injury on the weekend, which leaves a gaping hole in our defence, but when he’s fit and firing, there’s not too many better players in the competition.”
The team is now preparing to play CSU at home in what Sam said will be a big game.
“They’ve been travelling pretty well this year. If we could knock them off at home, that goes a very long way into solidifying our position in the top five. With such even competition this year, you lose one or two tight games, and you’ll find yourself out of the finals. It is a really big game coming up for us for sure.”
