It was an edge-of-your-seat masterpiece on Sunday when the Diesels took on the Dragons, resulting in a close loss for Junee 19 – 18 at Nixon Park. Chase Bernard and Jakeem Morgan proved to be key players over the weekend, but a sneaky field goal meant Temora just clutched the victory.
Reserves also faced a close loss 12 – 8. League tag put up a good fight, but went down 16 – 8.
Women’s tackle absolutely pummelled the Dragons 50 – 12. Under-18s had a good 18 – 16 win over Temora as well.
President of the Junee Diesels, David Holt, said it was an amazing day of great matches throughout every grade.
“We let Temora control the game a little bit in the opening stanza, but the boys dug deep and got their noses back in front. Unfortunately, we had a couple of injuries and a little lapse in concentration, and Temora ended up levelling the scores up and then in the dying stages of the game, probably about the last minute, they planted a field goal,” he said.
“Unfortunately, we didn’t come up with a win, but even with that, it was a cracking game.
“The Reserve grade game was the same. We had a great day over in Temora; it was really competitive football right throughout the day. Temora are sitting in second on the ladder in league tag, and our girls were going to come up against some pretty stiff opposition, and they stood up to the task.
“Our girls actually scored first, took Temora by surprise, and Temora just in the 2nd half, gradually put a few points on the scoreboard. With a 16-8 scoreline, the girls can be very proud of that result. It was a good game.
“The 18s came out with a point to prove, and they did that. The boys played probably the best game I’ve seen them play all year, and they ended up getting 2 points over top of Temora to take away the win there, so that was good.
“The women’s tackle, our ladies were fairly gallant in that game. I didn’t get to see much of the game, but the score line speaks for itself there.
“The reserve grade and the 18s have probably both played the game of the season there. The U18’s were fairly determined to get a victory, and they did.
It was a hard-fought battle as both sides were giving it to each other, but our blokes stood up to the task, and it was a good game of footy.
“We keep building and keep getting better. We’ve got a good culture there, and week in, week out, we just keep getting better.
“Now it’s onto the Kangaroos. We will assess the injuries and see how we’re going, and then make a plan from there. We’ve got a big day here at Laurie Daley Oval planned. It will be a good day.
“We have had good crowds, and we have had good support, and there have been big Junee crowds this year. We have had three home games now, and each one of them has been a cracking day.”
They play Wagga Kangaroos at Laurie Daley Oval on Saturday.
