On Monday, Junee Fire and Rescue Station 337 are opening applications for on-call firefighters for the area.
One of the biggest myths about firefighting is that it requires you to sit in a station waiting for a bell to ring. For On-Call (previously known as Retained) firefighters in Junee, nothing could be further from the truth.
Successful applicants carry a pager or use a smartphone app. They go about their daily lives, working their primary jobs, studying, or running errands. When an emergency occurs, they respond directly to the station.
Once trained, On-Call firefighters are responsible for a wide range of duties :
Emergency Response: Attending fires (structural and bush), motor vehicle accidents, and chemical hazards.
Rescue Work: Including basic life support, rope work, and using power tools to extract people from wreckage.
Community Safety: Educating school children, senior citizens, and local businesses on fire prevention.
An On-Call Firefighter works within a team to provide service to their community to protect life, property and the environment.
The selection process for On-Call firefighters is rigorous to ensure public safety. It involves:
Physical Aptitude Test (PAT): A physical assessment to ensure you can handle the demands of firefighting (including ladder simulations, carrying heavy loads, and hose dragging).
Medical and Criminal Checks: A comprehensive health assessment and a criminal history check.
