The Junee Lions Club recently held their annual changeover ceremony. This is the process of installing the new board for the incoming financial year. This year the ceremony was held at lunchtime at the Railway Café, with people travelling from surrounding towns to be part of the service.
Outgoing President Lion Peter Jauncey outlined many of the achievements of the Club for the past 12 months, including significant donations and support to local, national and international events and organisations, totalling over $10,00. He spoke in detail about how the club has been working in an area that Lions are passionate about, at that is the Eye Health Program. Our club has undertaking eye testing in schools in our area. This involves basic testing for things such as near and far sightedness, blurred vision and colour perception. The club has tested several 100 students in the area via this program.
The other of Eye Health that we launched this year is the donation of used prescription reading glasses. We have asked the Junee community to donate these so that we can send to other arms of Lions International who distribute them to people in developing countries. We have several places in the community where these can be donated including The Junee Medical Centre, Junee Capital Chemist and Junee Shire Council Office. We continued to ask for these to be donated and you do an upgrade on your glasses.
On the day of the Changeover, we also recognised some members service to Lions with Milestone Chevron Award. Lion Leon Butt received his 50-year chevron. Leon has been an integral part of the Junee Lions Club over the course of his 50-year membership, including many hundreds of hours he has spent at our cardboard and cans recycling shed, which is still our main fundraising activity for the club.
Lion Neil Sheedy was inducted as the new President for the next 12 months. The Induction ceremony was conducted by Lion Andrew Kelly, visiting from Lions Club of Tumbarumba. We were fortunate enough to be able to hold it on the first step of the pedestrian bridge at the station. This will be removed as part of the upgrade for Inland Rail. As part of the day the Junee Lions Club donated money to both St Vincent de Paul and Junee Open Kitchen, both of these organisations perform a great service to the community, especially supporting people in challenging times.
The Junee Lions Club would like to thank the community for their continued support. Without the support we could not continue to serve Junee and the wider community and Lions projects. A reminder that we are still always looking for cardboard, which is a major source of income for the club.
