As we hit the mid-point of the season, Marrar are sitting fourth on the ladder, which isn’t a bad place to be. But work is to be done if Marrar wants to make it all the way to the cup.
Marrar are tied on the ladder with Temora and North Wagga with 20 points – all having five wins and three losses.
The Junee Independent spoke to Sam Turner from the Marrar Bombers about how the season has gone for the Club and what the team are looking forward to as the year progresses.
“If you asked us at the start of the year, if we’d be happy with five wins and three losses, we’d definitely take it. It’s such an even competition. We could very easily be one and seven; we’ve had a lot of victories by single digits this year. It shows it’s a really great competition,” he said.
“Having the ability to dig deep in last quarters and find ways to win has been really pleasing.
“We didn’t have too many expectations coming into the season. We were always quietly confident that we had a good side, but you might think you’re travelling well, but you do not have much of an idea of how other teams are travelling either.
“We’re definitely happy with where we are, and if we could finish the season, maybe jump up one position, finish second or third coming into finals, I think that we would be pretty happy with that.
“We’ve got a few players back that wouldn’t have played, which will help, but we won’t have Caleb Walker, who has been our best player all year. He hurt his calf in the last game against Barellan.”
Although Sam said it wasn’t the start they had initially hoped for, the team has hit “their gears” as the season continues.
“They’ll be keen to make amends in that game, which is also our captain, Jed Jenkins’s 200th game, so they’ll be pretty keen to try and get a win for him,” he said.
“Jed is great around the club. His family have been involved forever. His old man’s still on the committee. His brother coaches our under-18s team. His fiancée was the coach of our A-grade netball side. They’re a great family to have involved at the club, and we’re very lucky to have them all. Big achievement for Jeddy to reach 200. Not too many can say they’ve played 200 games for one club and he’s still only young, so 200 is only a small number for what he’ll end up with.
“When we play Temora at home, it is always a massive game. Temora bring a really big crowd also. It’s probably our biggest crowd and our biggest game for the year when we play Temora at home. It’s always a great vibe at Marrar on a Saturday afternoon, watching the footy and hopefully, it should be a cracking game, so I’d be coming along if we can have any other plans.”
Marrar will play the Temora Roos at Langtry Oval on Saturday, June 13 at 2.10pm.
