The Junee Diesels have continued their winning ways, brushing aside fellow semi-finals aspirants South City Bulls by 10 points at Laurie Daley Oval on Sunday.
The 28-18 victory keeps Junee in fourth spot but within striking distance of the current top three sides on the competition ladder, with the Diesels also having the most favourable draw of all the leading sides in the run home.
Finding themselves down 8-6 at half-time, the Diesels have developed a habit of late of coming from behind, and Sunday was no different, outscoring the Bulls 22 points to 10 in the second half to claim two valuable competition points.
The Bulls, buoyed by the return of star players Matty Lyons and Nathan Rose, seemed to have the Diesels measure in the first half, as Rose and Isaac Hardman crossed, with the Diesels’ only response before the break coming through Quaider Kea.
Junee were first to post points in the second half through Connor Garrety and then struck shortly again after, as Cooper Wright followed suit.
But the Bulls weren’t finished with just yet, as Jumarne Little-Kearnes went over for a try with around a quarter of the game left.
Two more Diesels tries through Daniel Foley and Jakeem Morgan ensured the home side would score their third straight victory, whilst a Josh Siegwalt try prior to full-time reduced the final margin to 10.
Diesels coach Damian Willis acknowledged that although it wasn’t a perfect performance, it was pleasing just to win.
“It was not one of our best performances by any means, but it was a critical victory for us which puts us in a good position to play finals footy this year,” Willis said, also adding that it was yet another important day for the club with a milestone for a club favourite making the win all that much sweeter.
“Daniel Foley played his 200th Group 9 First Grade game, which is a nice achievement, and he was also one of our best again.”
The Diesels will use the next fortnight to ‘iron out a few niggles’ from the weekend just gone, then turning their attention to their next assignment, which includes a trip to the border to take on the Albury Thunder.
