More than four decades of unwavering service to the Junee community have earned Margaret Hill one of the region’s highest volunteer honours, with the local stalwart named Riverina Senior Volunteer of the Year.
The prestigious award was presented by Neville Kschenka, Mayor of Narrandera Shire Council, at a ceremony held at the Wagga RSL Club on Thursday.
This outstanding achievement recognises Margaret’s more than 40 years of volunteer service with Cooinda Court Aged Care and her extensive work supporting the Junee Showground Trust.
Member for Cootamundra, Steph Cooke, congratulates Margaret on the well-deserved accolade, describing her as one of the region’s most dedicated and respected volunteers.
“Margaret has devoted decades of her life to helping others, often working quietly behind the scenes to make a real difference in our community,” Ms Cooke said.
“This award recognises not only the countless hours she has contributed, but the lasting impact she has had on the lives of so many people across Junee.”
For more than four decades, Margaret has played an integral role at Cooinda Court Aged Care, serving in positions including Public Officer, Secretary, Grants Coordinator, and Keeper of Records and Archives.
Her leadership and commitment helped guide the organisation through significant aged care reforms and legislative changes while always maintaining a strong focus on the wellbeing of residents and their families.
In addition to her work with Cooinda Court, Margaret has dedicated countless volunteer hours as Grants Coordinator for the Junee Showground Trust, researching, preparing and managing grant applications that have secured vital funding for infrastructure improvements, community projects and facility upgrades.
Her efforts have strengthened the Showground’s ability to host events, support local organisations and continue serving as an important community asset for future generations.
“Margaret’s dedication demonstrates the extraordinary role volunteers play in strengthening regional communities,” Ms Cooke said.
“Through her persistence and willingness to serve, she has helped unlock opportunities and resources that continue to benefit residents and visitors alike.”
Beyond her administrative and governance contributions, Margaret is also known for generously volunteering her time to support elderly residents at Cooinda Court, providing companionship, kindness and care that enhances residents’ wellbeing and social connection.
Ms Cooke also extends her congratulations to all the nominees from the Cootamundra electorate, whose tireless work was commended by the NSW Centre for Volunteering.
“Across the Cootamundra electorate, volunteers are the driving force behind so many of the events and activities, as well as vital services including community transport and our emergency services,” Ms Cooke said.
“While they deserve our gratitude every day of the year, these awards are a valuable opportunity to recognise the remarkable impact they have on the lives of others and celebrate the kindness that defines our communities.”
