The South West Slopes Vietnam Veterans will conduct a Memorial Service in the Function Room in the Junee Ex-Services Memorial Club on the 18 August 2026.
This year is the 60th Anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan which involved D coy 6 Battalion Royal Australian Regiment when they were confronted by 2500 North Vietnam Troops. The Australians suffered 18 troops killed and another 24 wounded. All but one of the dead came from Delta Company. In the South West Slopes Vietnam Veterans we have a member who fought in the battle of Long Tan, Mr lan Dixon from Junee.
The 18 August was known as Long Tan Day until in 1987 the then Prime Minister Bob Hawke renamed the day as Vietnam Veterans Day to honour The Battle of Long Tan and it honours the service and sacrifice of all Australians who served in the Vietnam War.
Everyone is invited to attend the memorial service especially Vietnam Veterans and all ex-service and service members.
The service will commence at 10.50am and there will be a wreath laying service. Anyone is welcome to lay a wreath if you wish to do so. At the end of the service the wreaths will be taken up and laid at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in the Junee Cenotaph area.
