The Junee Diesels women’s tackle side has defeated Southcity Bulls 20-8 at Anzac Park on Sunday, to advance through to the major semi-final against Wagga Brothers.
Fresh from a victory over the previously undefeated Brothers a week earlier, the Diesels continued their momentum and are now just one win away from a place in this season’s Grand Final.
The match couldn’t have started any better for Junee, with Southcity making an error from the kick-off and gifting the Diesels valuable field position.
Although unable to capitalise immediately, Junee coach Emma Hickey showed some terrific footwork before steamrolling defenders on her way to scoring first points for the Diesels.
Annabelle Willis then provided some quality playmaking for Junee’s second try, producing a deft short kick for Chelsea Crowder to dive on and increase the Diesels’ lead to ten.
Just shy of half-time, Junee’s defence was caught napping and Southcity made the most of the opportunity to post their first points for the match.
Hickey again used her power before showing an impressive turn of foot to race 50 metres and score adjacent to the posts.
A sneaky try from dummy-half for Southcity made for an eight-point ball game and an exciting last third of the match.
Once more it was Hickey, who was outstanding for the victors, scoring her third through another spectacular long range individual effort and sealing the triumph for Junee with only minutes left.
This coming weekend’s match against Brothers provides an intriguing contest when looking at the last two times the sides have met.
Brothers managed to score a two-point victory over the Diesels early in the season, but Junee recorded a 28-10 win in the last regular season game and there would be no shortage of confidence oozing from the Diesels’ dressing room come Sunday.
